Robotics
Now celebrating its eighth year, Agnes Irwin’s F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics program includes an Upper School course and multiple, after-school robotics activities that attract more than forty Middle and Upper School girls.  The sequential, grades 5-12 program has three phases: the Middle School fall Lego league competitions; a technology challenge addressed by the Upper School Robotics course; and the culminating, “flagship” event – constructing a full-size robot to accomplish a designated, timed task at regional competitions.

In spring 2008, the girls of the AIS robotics team, Femme Tech Fatale, had a terrific showing at the F.I.R.S.T. Philadelphia regional competition held at Drexel University. Against a strong field of 44 teams, including champions from three previous regionals, the “Pink Flamingo” robot made it into the quarter finals and had some very exciting matches in an alliance with teams from Upper Darby H.S. and Dulaney H.S., Maryland.
