Novels, poetry, plays, short stories, analytical essays — all are part and parcel of our first-rate English program. Our classroom environments nurture and prize the expression of critical, original thinking and immerse students in the literary themes, cultural vantage points, and fictional and factual lives of the characters who populate a diverse curriculum. Assigned projects range from the rigorously academic (the exploration of Odysseus’s hubris in Homer’s
The Odyssey) to the fanciful (a celebration of the Bard’s birthday by decorating cakes with Shakespearean quotations). In written analytical assignments we encourage the construction of articulate, logical essays that defend a thesis, and students compose their own poetry and personal essays as well.
