Visual and Performing Arts
From the joys of creativity to the rigor of discipline and the self-awareness of reflection, much of what we hope to engender in our girls is learned through the arts. The Agnes Irwin Repertory Company produces two large productions a year, a musical in the fall, and a dramatic performance in the spring. Under the direction of our experienced faculty, students act and sing; design, build and decorate sets; and run sound and lighting boards. One highlight of the winter is Dance Motion, which includes professional as well as student choreography; with spring comes art exhibitions and photography shows. Classes in the performing arts include theater arts, music theory, and instrumental and vocal ensembles. The visual arts curriculum offers students opportunities in studio art, media arts, and photography. Studio artists practice design and composition while developing technical and conceptual skills; media arts students gain a basic knowledge of a variety of digital applications and their practical and aesthetic capabilities through the hands-on use of computers, scanners and digital cameras. In Honors and Advanced Placement Studio Art, students build portfolios for college, including drawings, paintings, 2-dimensional graphics, photography, digital printing, and 3-dimensional design. The Club program enhances and enriches the artistic experience at Agnes Irwin by offering the students additional opportunities such as pottery and set design.
