Letter From Anne
Dear Parents,

Life is… wonderful…Life is…art…Life is…an evening of song that will make you laugh, smile, and celebrate the fabulous talents of our Upper School performing arts students. In my third year at Irwin’s, I continue to be impressed and amazed by the talent of our drama students, skillfully directed by Bill Esher. This performance is no exception, and I enthusiastically encourage you to be serenaded by the lovely voices of Phoebe Smukler, Virginia Small, the Davis sisters, Rachel Hansen, Rebecca Kamens and the delightfully impish chorus. The comic humor of Saida Harpi will be greatly missed when she graduates this spring, and the talented dancing and stage presence of senior Skylar Frederick will be hard to replace, while the staging, costumes, and lighting were a perfect level of simplicity.

The Can Drive this past week was a huge success, with a total of over 2,700 cans collected, topped by the seniors at 1,500! There are many turkey dinners being assembled as well. Irwin’s won the first-ever Best School Participation Trophy for our involvement level of 30 students, parents, and faculty members in the Penn Medicine Radnor Run on Halloween.

This week, the SOS Board and Girls’ Grant-Making had lunch with Hilary Morgan, nationally known homeless advocate, who regaled them with stories of Australia, refugee camps in the Philippines, Native Hawaiians and Alaskans, and the challenges of understanding the perspectives of the homeless. Senior Rachel Wahl comments, “It was a great opportunity to gain insight into the field of social work. Hilary shared many stories about her experiences with less fortunate people and the homeless. This was a great addition to our board’s focus this year on the homeless. I loved how Hilary focused on the importance of never judging a homeless person. No one chooses to be in that position; therefore, we have no right to stereotype. This message was very powerful for me and my classmates.”

In the same vein, the 9th grade class will be working with Laurel House for their day of service on November 30th. Please also see the attached letter from Jenn Fiorini in the Downloads section, outlining local opportunities for personal service over the holidays. My holiday commitment has always been managing food collection in my community to support the Delaware Food Bank. Remember that even the smallest contribution can make a difference in the lives of others.

Finally, we will be celebrating the accomplishments of our fall athletes on the Recognition evening on November 30th.

Life is… Agnes Irwin!

Holocaust Survivor Visits French Class
As part of their unit on "France under the German Occupation," 11th grade students in French IV Honors had the opportunity to meet and converse with French Holocaust survivor Renee Hartz on Wednesday, November 10.  Mme. Hartz, who was hidden in the French countryside by ordinary people who risked their lives to protect this young Jewish girl and her family, is the subject of the touching memoir Your Name is Renee
