Letter From Anne
Dear Parents,

So often when we talk about the college admission process, we talk about our children being able to demonstrate a passion. Whether it be a long-term commitment to a sport, to community service, to playing an instrument, or to writing poetry, we all hope that a passion may turn into a life-long love that will fuel our child into adulthood. After all, we all know that having a passion for something keeps us vital.

For those alumnae and current students who have taken French with Madame Barnett, her passion has been an inspiration in acquiring and appreciating the beauty of the language, but also in learning about the impact of the Holocaust on France. Madame Barnett has passionately dedicated her academic life to researching this era and interviewing living survivors of this terrible period in history. She has published a book, created a documentary, and spoken about her research in many an academic arena. But next week, she will experience the crème de la crème when she travels to Paris, where La France Divisée, her documentary complete with music composed by our very own Murray Savar, will be screened. Please make sure to view a detailed article about Mme Barnett’s upcoming trip, as well as how she has integrated the project into her curriculum, in the “News” section of the AIS website.

In the same international vein, students will participate in Model United Nations over the MLK weekend, so they are busily putting the finishing touches on their research. On MLK Day, there will be several options for service, including ceramics for the Empty Bowls fundraiser, trips to local non-profit support groups, and art work with the Lower Schoolers. Please consider having your daughter involved in this day of service dedicated to Dr. King’s legacy.

Finally, there have been some healthy changes in the cafeteria. There are some lower item prices, and a healthier and more local fare is being offered. For specifics on these changes, please see the attachment to the right. This next week, there will be a test run of the emergency alarm for a lock-down procedure so students will recognize the sound for a practice drill a few weeks later.

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

Anne

Important AIS Safety Information
In Agnes Irwin’s ongoing attention to safety and security, the school will be reviewing with students and staff its lockdown procedures in the case of imminent danger. The review will involve a test of the emergency alarm system so students can identify the particular alarm sound, an overview of the lockdown procedures and then a practice drill a few weeks later.
