Letter from Anne
Dear Parents,

Most of the students are focused on exam preparation this week, but we also have other events coming up that are of interest.

First, this Saturday at 2:00 P.M. the Softball team will be hosting a Home Run Derby on campus. All Inter-Ac schools, boys and girls, will be participating. T-shirts will be on sale, and all proceeds from t-shirt sales will go to The Kelly Rooney Foundation/Save 2nd Base, a Foundation created in memory of a woman named Kelly Rooney, who passed away at the age of 43 and left five young children behind. The Foundation raises funds and awareness for breast cancer. KRF and S2B gave Katie McCollum a surprise scholarship this week. If you didn’t see the media coverage, check out the “Wall” on our homepage at www.agnesirwin.org, or visit www.mainlinemedianews.com, www.delcotimes.com, and www.philly.com. There will also be food, drinks, plants and other items on sale. This event will be a lot of fun and a “home run” for breast cancer awareness. We hope all students, parents, and staff can join us.

Soon, we will be celebrating the accomplishments of our performing arts students at The Cappies Gala, where AIS has garnered five nominations in eight eligible categories: Best costumes, Best ensemble, Best supporting actress, Best lead actress, and Best play. For those of you who saw the play this past week, I am sure you are not surprised! The Awards ceremony is at Upper Darby High School on Sunday, May 15, at 6:00 P.M. Come dressed to the nines and cheer our girls on!

The Cum Laude assembly is on Monday, May 16 at noon (attendance and uniform dress required), where we honor those students who have gained the highest average in the top twenty percent of the senior class. The speaker this year will be Lindsey D. Carson, AIS Class of 1997. Lindsey graduated from Duke University, received a master’s degree in development studies from the London School of Economics, and earned her JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She is currently a lawyer with the Washington, D.C. law firm Arnold & Porter LLP. The Cum Laude Society recognizes academic achievement in secondary schools for the purpose of promoting excellence (Areté), justice (Diké,) and honor (Timé).

Finally, it is a good time for your daughters to be thinking about community service, and summer is a great time to fulfill your community service hours! Please see the handout “Summer Outreach Opportunities” to get some ideas for places to look. In addition, during the week of August 1, AIS will be hosting a camp for Lose The Training Wheels, an organization that helps children with disabilities learn to ride bikes. This is a fun and amazing volunteer opportunity for girls ages 15 and older. We’re looking for 40 volunteers – please sign up with Mrs. Fiorini or Ms. Mayer!

Some last minute exam tips:
· Study before you go to sleep, and you will remember the information better
· Get 8 hours of sleep the night before an exam
· Eat a hearty breakfast and bring a Snickers bar for a mid-exam energy boost
· If you are nervous about the exam, research has shown that writing down why you are anxious just before the exam will help you get a better grade (truly!)

Have a good weekend and good luck next week!
