Letter from Lynne
Dear Parents,

Wednesday’s Science Symposium was super! The research was terrific, the girls seemed proud, they looked people in the eyes and they made great presentations. The sixth grade projects were very impressive – cleverly conceived, scientifically pursued and attractively presented. I was particularly struck by the manner with which they spoke to adults, explaining what they did, what they discovered and what they concluded. There is a whole lot more at play here than science…

Seventh graders dressed up as the element they have been researching, demonstrating some way in which the element is used, or an impact the element has on our lives. They all were amusing and well-conceived, and demonstrated good thought in preparation. One parent told me, “She really wasn’t too interested in starting chemistry, but now she’s hooked.”

Finally, I came away from the VOFMIO sustainable communities, and the girls who had researched, planned, argued, modeled and presented them, wholly wowed. I have to believe we have some future engineers, LEED architects, city planners and politicians in that class. The depth of the knowledge I heard in their explanations of why they made the decisions they did was, in many cases, stunning.

Thank you to Katie Cooper, Nicole Vishio, Leslie Hahne, Jenny Hoffman and Cheryl Ellis for their guidance. The impact of their teaching was impossible to miss on Wednesday night. Congratulations all around. Girls and science are alive and well at AIS!!

Have a nice weekend,

Lynne
