Symposium Showcases Students' Strength in Science
On Wednesday, May 18, the collective AIS Middle School community gathered to attend the Middle School Science Symposium, where 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students presented a comprehensive collection of fascinating interactive and informative science projects.

Middle School students beamed as they shared their months of research, hypotheses, and collaboration with parents, faculty member and classmates. The sixth grade showcased original science projects, which according to Director of Middle School Lynne Myavec were “cleverly conceived, scientifically pursued and attractively presented.” Original efforts ranged from Pennsylvania specific “Natural Repellents for Stink Bugs” to environmentally conscious “Solar-lovin Ovens,” and the very important fundamental inquiry of “Is the Five Second Rule Accurate?” Myavec was also impressed by the lucid communication the girls demonstrated in explaining their findings.

Seventh graders came dressed as the individual chemical elements they were assigned to research and describe to symposium guests. Creativity was put to the test as the girls had to “dress to impress” their audience with how their element is used in the world or how it impacts our lives. For example, the element for lead was represented by way of an energizer bunny. The girls were excited and entertaining as they presented themselves, as elements, to their audience.

Since early March, the 8th graders worked diligently to become experts on the use of energy, water, and natural resources in their quest to design a completely sustainable community. The girls were given a fictitious planet, VOFMIO, based on a real planet that exists outside our solar system, to inspire their progressive sustainable communities. Myavec commented that “I have to believe we have some future engineers, LEED architects, city planners and politicians” in the 8th grade class based on the incredible interest and comprehension that was reflected in the sustainable community projects.

The evening was one that students in grades 6, 7, and 8 will never forget as each of them begins a lifelong love of and passion for science. Darin Katz, Science Department Chair, reflects “The night was simply magical and highlighted the emphasis that Agnes Irwin places on STEM each and every day.”
