Frequently Asked Questions About SSP
1. Can I change my mind after I am enrolled in an SSP?

No withdrawal or changes in course enrollment may be made absent extraordinary circumstances. Because the expenses of chaperones are shared by students, the cost of each course is based on a minimum enrollment. Thus, a signed application and payment of the deposit is an agreement by the parent to pay the full cost of the course. Once a student is enrolled in a course, no changes will made to course enrollment absent extraordinary circumstances.

2. At what point will I be considered “enrolled” in an SSP?

For travel courses, a student will be enrolled in her first choice after receiving a signed application and deposit. If enrollment in a student’s first choice is not possible, the SSP director will only enroll a student in her second or third choice after a conversation with a parent. For local courses, students will be enrolled only after receipt of the $50 deposit due by November 7.

3. Can I make other travel arrangements if I have a conflict and want to leave my travel SSP early?

No. For travel SSPs, students must travel with the group.

4. What if too many students sign up for one SSP?

If the number of students interested in an SSP offering exceeds the maximum number, students will be assigned to their second or third choices. Students in 11th grade will be given preference over students in 10th grade. If the number of interested students still exceeds the maximum, participants will be chosen by lottery.

5. What if AIS has to cancel a travel course for safety reasons? Will I get all of my money back?

The safety of the students is our primary concern. If, in the opinion of the school administration, the course location or activities become unsafe, the school may cancel the course. The SSP program will purchase travel insurance for all participants, and every effort will be made to ensure that money paid is refunded. The insurance may not cover every circumstance under which the school may cancel the course, however. Thus, it is possible that a course will be canceled without a full refund of money paid.

6. Does AIS guarantee that the chaperones listed here will be the chaperones that travel with the group?

No. In the event of a family emergency, a change in health or another unforeseen circumstance, a chaperone may become unavailable, and the school will substitute an alternative.

7. On travel SSPs, will students’ access to cell phones be limited?

Yes. Unlimited cell phone use is counterproductive in many ways to the SSP experience. Thus, this is an “unplugged experience.” One exception is students in home stays. For safety reasons, they will be permitted to use cell phones. Of course, parents and chaperones will have emergency contact numbers.
