9th Graders Inducted into Upper School Life during Poconos Retreat Making the transition from middle school to high school can be daunting, even stressful. “What’s going to be expected of me as an Upper School student?” “Is the curriculum going to be challenging?” “Do teachers treat you differently than they do when you’re in middle school?” The litany of unknowns can be maddening. Fortunately for 9th graders at Agnes Irwin, their pressing and personal questions about Upper School life were answered during the annual 9th grade overnight retreat on Thursday, September 22 at the scenic Pocono Valley Resort in Stroudsburg, PA.
The retreat is an effort by upperclassman and Agnes Irwin faculty and staff to formally welcome and initiate freshman into the Upper School community. Organized by Upper School student leaders, the retreat was by all accounts a success -- with break-out sessions exploring various clubs and leadership opportunities, as well as opportunities to personally connect with classmates in between kayak racing and roasting marshmallows.
“We have a busy life at Agnes Irwin,” said Deanna Mayer, Upper School Dean of Students. “It’s important for the students to step away every now and then, and the retreat gives them the opportunity to do just that. It also gives our newest members of the Upper School community time to connect with each other and bond with seniors.” According to Ms. Mayer, students return to classes feeling like they are officially part of Upper School life and “instilled with the steep devotion and drive inherent in Agnes Irwin students.”
