The athletic philosophy statement below was created last spring by the Athletic Advisory Committee composed of parents, trustees, faculty and coaches. We are grateful to everyone who came together to craft this philosophy, which is woven into every aspect of Agnes Irwin Athletics.

Athletic Philosophy Statement

With a rich history of achievement, The Agnes Irwin School Athletics Program instills a life-long commitment to teamwork, leadership and reaching one’s personal best. Each athlete is guided in the transition from skill-building to mastery, solidifying a foundation of discipline, dedication, and confidence that fuels institutional pride and spirit. By providing a range of opportunities, our program supports the pre-collegiate athlete as well as the individual who aspires to continue a healthy lifestyle. The cornerstone of our philosophy centers on character, confidence, commitment and competitiveness.

Upper School Athletic News
The fall season is a busy time with five varsity sports taking place. The teams have been working very hard and are near the midpoint of their seasons. Our varsity volleyball team is currently undefeated and is a very exciting team to watch. The soccer team has been plagued by injuries, but the girls continue to work hard and battle every opponent. Although they lost to Baldwin on Tuesday, they played a great second half, losing 5-4. Varsity field hockey has demonstrated excellent play in their last three games, beating both Springside and Baldwin, while losing to top-ranked Notre Dame 1-0. The tennis team continues to display their strong skills on the court and, as of yesterday, has a record of 7-3. The cross country team continues to excel – recently defeating Episcopal Academy. Their only league loss to date was against top-ranked Notre Dame. The team has also participated in a few top-notch races –  most recently The Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University last Friday. Running against as many as 45 schools in the White Division, the AIS runners placed fourth; Christina Wusinich, 6th overall in 19:48, and Vivian Hastings placed 19th in a time of 20:09. I encourage you to come support the girls by cheering them on from the sidelines.

Middle School Volleyball Update
The Middle School volleyball teams hosted Baldwin for their season opener on Monday. Both teams were so excited to begin playing matches.

The varsity team jumped out early in their first game with effective serving to take the lead. Baldwin rallied a comeback to make the game close. AIS pulled ahead in the first game and finished with a 25-18 win. In the second game, AIS played each point with terrific teamwork to gain the lead early. The team never looked back and finished the second game 25-11 to win their first match of the season.

The JV volleyball team began their season with energy and enthusiasm capturing their first game of the match 25-18. In the second game, Baldwin broke open the lead with a serving run. AIS mounted a strong comeback, but was not able to overcome the deficit, loosing 17-25. The third game, a nail bitter, showed outstanding team performances. The teams traded leads, but AIS broke open with a serving run to win their first match 2-1. Both teams are looking forward to a successful and exciting season.
