Hall of Fame Basketball Coach Cathy Rush Visits AIS
Families and friends of The Agnes Irwin School filled the West-Wike Theatre on Thursday, October 6 to view a special pre-screening of “The Mighty Macs” and to hear from Cathy Rush, the woman whose life story inspired the movie.

The featured film – to be released in theaters on October 21 – depicts the journey of Rush, a pioneer in women’s sports who coached the Mighty Macs of Immaculata College to three consecutive national basketball championship titles from 1972-1974.

During a time when women’s athletic programs did not receive much attention, Rush put a team from a small women’s college into the national spotlight. Her leadership and dedication to helping the young women of the Mighty Macs realize their potential and strive to succeed teaches a lesson of persistence and perseverance for all girls today.

After the pre-screening, Rush answered questions from the audience about the making of the motion picture and the longevity of her career. She commented on the importance of sharing one’s story because one never knows when he or she can become a source of inspiration for others. Even the smallest acts of encouragement can make a difference.

As the Head Basketball Coach at Immaculata, Rush brought her team to six consecutive Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Final Four appearances, attaining an overall record of 149-15 for the program. She went on to direct and coach the U.S. Women’s Basketball Team at the 1975 Pan American games, leading them to a gold medal finish. Rush was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. She also is a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.

The Agnes Irwin community was honored to have Rush, a member of the Advisory Board for the Center for the Advancement of Girls (CAG), share her film and words of empowerment at this special pre-screening.
