Varsity Volleyball Team Named Inter-Ac Champs
The Varsity volleyball team clinched the Inter-Ac league title Friday night in an exciting match versus the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur.

Led by Senior co-captains Victoria Hammarskjold and Kate Tocci, the Owls started off strong and finished the match with a 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21) victory over the Irish. Hammarskjold, as the team’s center, had a standout performance while her sister Alexandra ’14 and Anne Metzinger ’13 had several scoring opportunities.

“It was an exceptional match. Both teams were out to win. With the league championship on the line, everyone competed with intensity and worked together as a team. All of our seniors were able to play in the game, and it was their strong leadership that led us to victory,” said Head Coach David Noll.

The title-winning game also marked the team’s second annual participation in “Dig Pink,” a national event led by college, high school and middle school volleyball players to raise awareness for breast cancer research. The Owls sported special pink jerseys designed with the breast cancer ribbon logo. Friends and family members in the crowd cheered them on and made donations to support the cause.

“It felt amazing when we won!” said Victoria Hammarskjold. “It was the perfect way to end my high school volleyball career at Agnes Irwin. Each game in the match was very close, which made me nervous at times; but, I had confidence in my teammates and knew that we would pull through in the end. Having so many of our fans at the game created a really high-energy and supportive atmosphere, which definitely motivated the team to make aggressive and strategic plays. We could not have done it without them! They were incredibly supportive of our team and the “Dig Pink” message!”

By the end of the night, team had raised more than $3,000 for the Side-Out Foundation, which awards monetary grants to cancer research organizations.

The Varsity volleyball team finished out their regular season games with a win over Springside School on October 25, making them undefeated Inter-Ac league champions!
