Letter from Donna

Happy Friday!

The ghosts, superheroines, storybook characters, fairies, iPods and Mrs. Linder’s son, Don, all had a wonderful time at our Halloween Parade. On behalf of the Lower School teachers and children, our thanks goes out to those of you who were able to be a part of the day. We hope you had as much fun as we did. Special thanks go to Suzanne Zelov and Sherri DeRosa, who put together a fabulous PumpkinFest for all to enjoy!

On to our next event—the Book Fair begins this Sunday afternoon, and I encourage you to attend if you are able to do so. Today at our assembly, I introduced the girls to the One Book One Agnes Irwin initiative that kicks off with the Book Fair. You should have received information electronically about this exciting program which is being co-sponsored by the Center for the Advancement of Girls and The Agnes Irwin Diversity Committee.

Next Friday is AIS/EA Day. You should have received electronic communication from Sheila Pauley earlier this week describing this wonderful tradition. This year’s event is being held on Episcopal’s campus and promises to be an exciting afternoon of cross country, soccer, field hockey and tennis. Friday, November 11 will be Spirit Day in the Lower School. On that day, children may come to school out of uniform but wearing blue and yellow to support the athletes. I encourage you to check out the Athletics page of the website, where you will find all the details of the day, including how to reserve your space on the Fan Bus to EA. We will be releasing Lower School girls at 2 p.m. to those parents who want to take their children to the competitions. Any Lower Schoolers not being picked up early will stay at school and be dismissed at the regular times.

Finally, a “Save the Date” request: We will hold our first Parent Wellness Lecture of the year on January 25, 2012. Members of the non-profit organization A Chance to Heal will engage us in a dialogue on raising resilient girls in a body-conscious world. The messages that girls receive, even unintentionally, can impact them for a lifetime. I hope to see many of you there.

Have a glorious weekend!

- Donna

FRENCH WEEK - La semaine du français
Bonjour! Next week (Nov. 8-14) is French Week! Check out Philadelphia's cultural offerings (movies, exhibitions, etc.), having to do with the French-speaking world. Watch a French movie with your daughter, read Madeline or Tintin, watch a web-cam (e.g. www.paris-live.com), go on a virtual visit of the Louvre, get some croissants or éclairs for breakfast, play some of the games listed on the AIS website under LS resources…The possibilities are endless!
The LS French students have started talking about Le Tour de France in class and will have their own race next week! In addition, they will have a visitor from Île Maurice who will talk to grades 3 and 4 about her home island. Amusez-vous bien!
