Below are some questions and answers that will help you get ready for your visit. We can’t wait to see you!
Do I need to apply before coming to visit? Yes, you do need to submit your application before you come to visit. Your application and “Getting to Know You” form will help us make the best possible match with a student hostess and schedule you in classes that meet your interests.
What should I wear for my Visit Day? The girls here are active and busy. Because you’ll be all around the campus, you’ll want to be in comfortable school clothing (no jeans or t-shirts, please). Wear your sneakers and bring appropriate outwear, if needed. If you wear a uniform at your current school, you may feel most comfortable wearing it on your Visit Day as well.
What time should I arrive at AIS? Where do I go? Applicants to grades 6-12 should arrive at 8:30 a.m., while applicants to grade 5 will arrive a little earlier at 8:10 a.m. Agnes Irwin has two entrances on South Ithan Avenue. Please use the Middle/Upper School entrance, which is marked by The Agnes Irwin School sign. The other driveway with the stone pillars is the entrance to our Lower School. Parents should park in the reserved Admission parking spaces facing the soccer field. We will meet you in the Main Lobby and walk you to your first class to meet your hostess and her friends.
Do I need to bring anything with me? You don’t need to bring anything with you. Our teachers have all that you will need. However, if you would like to bring a book to read in case your hostess has a quiz or test, you are welcome to do so. For snack and lunch, you are our guest! You can choose to eat whatever you like from our delicious cafeteria. Snack can vary daily, and offerings include breakfast foods, snack bars and fruit. For lunch, you’ll be able to choose between a hot entrée, full salad bar, pasta bar and a sandwich station. There are plenty of options to serve all different tastes.
Can I request a hostess? We do our best to pair you with a hostess who shares your interests and talents. If you know someone who is a student in your grade at Agnes Irwin, you may request that she be your hostess. However, many visitors prefer to meet someone new.
Which grade will I visit? Most applicants will spend the entire day with one hostess who is in her current grade. If you are applying for grade 5, you will spend the majority of the day in a fourth grade classroom to get to know the girls in your grade. Toward the end of the day, you and your fourth grade hostess will spend one period in a fifth grade class to get a feel for the Middle School building and schedule.
Applicants to grade 9 will have an eighth grade hostess for the majority of the day and a ninth grade hostess for a few classes. This will give you a sense of both the girls in your grade and of Upper School life.
What will my day be like? Once you arrive in the Main Lobby, we will take you to your first class to meet your hostess and her teacher. Throughout the day, you will shadow your hostess in all of her classes and meet girls in your year. You will have time to relax during snack and flex time, play at gym and have fun at lunch. If you want to participate in classes, by all means, raise your hand! We’d love to hear what you have to say. If you prefer to take some time to warm up, that is just fine too. This day is for you to spend time in our community. You’ll see for yourself that all types of girls are happy and comfortable here. Your day will end at 2:45 p.m., when your parent or guardian picks you up.
I’ve heard about “interviews”… do I need to prepare? You don’t need to prepare. Your “interview” will be a casual conversation with one of our Admission Directors. This is a chance for us to get to know each other better. We will talk about your day at Agnes Irwin, discuss your academic and extracurricular interests and answer any questions you might have.
Is it normal to feel nervous? Visiting schools is exciting and a little scary—a combination that often results in jittery nerves! Don’t worry—we are here to make your day as relaxed, fun and informative as possible. Our visitors leave with a great sense of the lively students, engaging academics and warm community that make Agnes Irwin a great place to go to school!
What if I have a question after my Visit Day? We are here to answer your questions at any time. If there is something you would like to discuss after your Visit Day, just give us a call at 610.525.8400. Anyone in the Admission Office would be happy to talk to you!
