Scores of Agnes Irwin athletes, supported by many parents and faculty, turned out Wednesday night to celebrate their achievements for the season, including being the player who tried the hardest, the player who reached the farthest and the player who improved the most.
For Varsity tennis, 8th grader Camille Smukler received the Unsung Hero Award, which is presented to the player who, through unselfish loyalty, individual leadership and general all-round fine play, makes an outstanding contribution to the team.
Sophomore Ryshena Providence received the Excellence Award, senior Margaret Chiumento received the Coaches Award, and juniors Phoebe Smukler and Maisie Allen received the Most Improved Award. Junior Marielle Berkman received the Most Improved Award for JV tennis.
The Excellence Award is typically bestowed upon an individual who, by and through pure performance, has been instrumental in the success of the team. If a player contributes the highest overall statistics, she is often the player judged to be the most important to the sport having demonstrated excellence in the sport itself. Therefore, the award recognizes the player who realized the best overall performance by way of achieving the most significant statistics.
The Coaches Award is given to the athlete who enables her team to develop a strong foundation from which they approach and achieve their team goals. In a unique way, this player often strives to uphold AIS athletic traditions and establishes a strong sense of pride while fostering a winning team spirit! On the field, court, pool or course, this player is a contributor in every sense. We recognize her not only for her contributions to the game, but also for her remarkable strength of character.
"We're so proud of the workmanship, team spirit and leadership that our athletes unwaveringly exhibited," said Sheila Pauley, Director of Athletics at Agnes Irwin. "Their hard work culminated in an impressive and memorable season."
The Unsung Hero Award in Varsity volleyball went to junior Anne Mentzinger and the Excellence Award went to senior Victoria Hammarskjold, while her sister, sophomore Alexandra, received the Coaches Award along with senior Katherine Tocci. The Most Improved Award went to junior Katharine Boris for Varsity and freshman Nile Harris for JV.
