Dear Parents,
I have referenced the Consortium class in this column a number of times. It is one of those signature programs that doesn’t get much attention, despite the fact it is probably one of the more enriching experiences for our students. Each year, in the winter trimester, Juniors are able to apply for one of four spots offered in this Senior Honors elective. Typically, the number of applicants falls in the high twenties, and students are chosen through a blind essay reading. The class then meets five times between the spring trimester and winter of senior year. Students from Shipley, Baldwin and Haverford also participate.
The class focuses on an interdisciplinary topic, this year’s being Arts and Science with a concentration on “Making the Invisible Visible.” Students and faculty from each school prepare an evening class that is accompanied by dinner.
Agnes Irwin presented the final class this year, introducing the students to concepts in physics and light. Lauren Wenger, Allie Erixxon, Paige Chandler and Fifi Yeung each presented an aspect of the topic for which they had a special interest. The class then moved to an experiential activity in “painting with light,” which combined both the science of light and the science of taking pictures with various aperture speeds. The resulting “artwork” was delightful!
This course takes an extra ounce of dedication by both students and faculty, and it is a wonderful way for students from the four schools to work together in an experiential setting. Enjoy the accompanying “paintings!” (See photos below.) I hope all of you were able to attend the winter concert this past Monday night, where we enjoyed the various musical groups sharing their talent. It was truly a beautiful community gathering! Have a restful and peaceful winter break!
