Tuning Up Agnes Irwin’s Instrumental Program |
Piloting a new event that combines the Lower School String Program, Middle School Instrumental Ensemble and Upper School Instrumental Ensemble, music teacher Ben Vaughan has organized the first Winter Instrumental Music Expo at Agnes Irwin, taking place on Monday, January 30 at 7 p.m. in the West-Wike Theatre. The Expo will be a harmonically-stimulating evening, providing an opportunity for the Lower School string players to give their first performance and the instrumental program as a whole to perform together, showcasing classroom exercises and behind-the-scenes skills that students have steadily developed in each division. "One of the positive aspects of having the younger girls demonstrate more facets of their classroom learning is that it helps illustrate the pace of learning to parents and the community," said Mr. Vaughan. "There are so many dimensions of their instrument to learn to simply be able to produce a sound; the girls deserve a chance to show off how much they really know how to do." This year, the total number of Lower School instrumentalists is the largest its ever been. By initiating the Expo, Mr. Vaughan hopes to create a feeling of wholeness amongst the three divisions. "The Expo is a step toward creating a culture of sharing with younger students. I would love to see older students regularly visiting the younger ensembles to play and teach. The packed schedule in each division makes this a challenge, but the Expo is a move in what I think is the right direction." |

Award-Winning Artist Donates Artwork to Cause |

Ted Ellis, an award-winning artist, is donating some of his original art pieces to the Agnes Irwin Arts Board's upcoming exhibition, "Art for Eburru." The Arts Board is calling on the AIS community to support education in Kenya for the second year in a row. Last year, the Arts Board raised $1,600 (the equivalent of 150,000 Kenyan shillings). The money was used to replace outdated textbooks with new textbooks - a crucial step in the advancement of education in a secondary school in Kenya. In an effort to raise money for the school in Eburru, Kenya, artwork will be sold at the "Art for Eburru" exhibit in the Moran Gallery from January 23 to February 3. The Arts Board is accepting submissions until Friday, January 20. Download event and submission information here. |
