Alumna Meets with Captains

On Thursday, January 19, Kim Macaione ’89 met with the current team captains to discuss their experiences in athletics at AIS as well as their roles as captains. Kim was the recipient of both the Carter Mannion ’81 Student-Athlete Scholarship in 1988 and the Stephanie Christie Award in 1989. At AIS, Kim was a 3-sport athlete in field hockey, volleyball and lacrosse. She went on to play both field hockey and lacrosse at Division I Lafayette College.

Kim talked with the girls about her team experiences at AIS and discussed ways of motivating one another within their respective teams by providing examples of some of the tools that her teams used during her AIS career. The captains described the dynamics of their athletic teams and expressed their desire to have the same passion for athletics that existed during Kim’s time at Agnes Irwin.

Middle School Sports Highlights
Squash
The Middle School squash team defeated Shipley 8-1 this week. Some other highlights from the season include: A great build on last season with some phenomenal wins against GFS and Shipley thus far. The team's strength is in its depth. Several players have shown that hard work and determination can pay off. Camille Smukler, not deterred by her starting position of 11, has risen in the ranks and now plays 4th on the team and hasn't lost a match since getting there! Similarly, Carolyn Shipe deserves noting, as she too has risen in the ranks in the second round of challenges from 8 to 6th. Thanks to all the team for proving hard work, determination and belief fostered within a great team atmosphere can create results!

JV Basketball
The Middle School JV basketball team pulled out a win in overtime at Friends' Central on Wednesday. In a game that went back and forth for four quarters, AIS played strong man-to-man defense to keep it close. AIS scored to tie the game 14 – 14 with under a minute to go in regulation. Agnes Irwin continued their strong defensive effort throughout the overtime to win 16 – 14.

Swimming
The Middle School swim team lost to Baldwin 66-40 in its first meet of the season on Wednesday. Baldwin outscored AIS because of its sheer numbers of swimmers, but AIS won 7 of the 10 events. Both Riley Flick and Deja Lewis-Nwalipenja won their individual events and swam in two winning relays. Morgan Smith and Cordelia Hare swept first and second places in the 50-yard breaststroke. Three AIS swimmers – Julia McDowell, Caroline Richardson and Cici Lozano-Torres – turned in impressive performances in their first meet ever. Both Sara Wada and Emma Lewis swam season best times for 50-yard freestyle. Swimming the final leg of the 100-yard free relay, Anisha Mittal had the crowd on its feet when she came from behind but did not quite overtake her Baldwin opponent. The AIS swimmers are looking forward to the next meet against Germantown Academy.
