Special Studies, Authentic Learning
The Special Studies Program (SSP) allows students to spend two weeks away from school to explore special interests in the greater classroom of the "real world." Sophomores and Juniors can choose one of the school-sponsored courses offered, develop an independent program or a combination of the two.

As one of Agnes Irwin's signature learning opportunities, SSPs set many goals:
  • connect students to authentic, real-world opportunities in alternative learning environments
  • expand a student's understanding of the world beyond Agnes Irwin and/or deepen her pursuit of a special talent or interest
  • develop self-confidence and decision-making skills
  • extend the curriculum, combine academic disciplines, spark a career interest or provide community service opportunities
  • teach self-awareness, self advocacy and self sufficiency
  • give students opportunities to work collaboratively toward meaningful goals
The school-sponsored programs are organized by specific departments. For example, the Modern Language department usually offers language-immersion programs for students studying both French and Spanish. Recent courses of study from the Science department include programs studying the ecology of the Florida Keys and the Galapagos Islands, as well as a session exploring sustainable agriculture. The History department recently offered an SSP examining the impact of immigration on Philadelphia. There are usually several community service opportunities as well, such as work at a Habitat for Humanity site in South Carolina and at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. New courses are offered each year.

Preparation, reflection and sharing: Participants in each SSP offering will meet as a group four times during the year to engage in activities created to prepare them for their experiences. Participation in these sessions is mandatory. During SSP, there will be times for reflection built into each day’s activities. Afterward, each student will write an essay as well as share her experiences with classmates in her advisory.
