Why We Believe In All-Girls' Education
Founded in 1869, The Agnes Irwin School is a nationally-recognized leader in all-girls' education. In the last ten years, a growing body of research has centered on the benefits of a girl-centered education - an excellent resource for these findings is provided by the National Coalition of Girls' Schools.
This site offers the latest information on girls and sports, girls and technology, teaching strategies and resources for educators, tips for parents on how to raise confident and competent daughters, and a wealth of publications related to girls and their education and development.

  • Strong female role-models inspire girls to develop higher expectations for themselves.
  • Girls are more apt to elect higher level math and science courses.
  • A willingness to take calculated risks in the classroom is promoted.
  • Programs sensitive to the developmental, social, intellectual and emotional needs of girls are offered.
  • Girls are encouraged to be active participants in class and extracurricular activities.
  • Faculty/coaches are focused on the welfare of girls 100% of the time.
  • There are more opportunities to develop leadership and public speaking skills.
  • Participation in sports exists at a much higher level.
  • Without boys, girls are focused on their performance rather than appearance.
A girl-centered education is a great opportunity. More than 4,000 Agnes Irwin alumnae will attest to that.

The Center for the Advancement of Girls (CAG) is a new initiative of The Agnes Irwin School. Its mission is to foster leadership, an awareness of the global community, an intellect fit for 21st century learning, a conscious concern for well-being and other essential skills in girls. The work of the Center focuses on applying and disseminating current research and designing cutting-edge programming that will enrich the lives of students, parents and educators.
