Fifth grade art covers Elements of Art and Principles of Design, reinforcing the commonly used visual arts language of our time. Each project is designed to emphasize one or more of the elements and/or principles while advancing students in the use of materials and techniques. Students develop further knowledge in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture and the varied processes they involve. While some projects develop skills emphasizing art elements or design principles, such as color, value or texture, balance, movement etc., others focus on specific techniques, such as spatial skills with newspaper and art in motion constructions, and the multilayered process of collagraph prints. Still other projects concentrate on imagination, and self-expression, helping students understand the variety of purposes for creating art.

The curriculum is designed to integrate with other disciplines such as science, English, history and math. Concepts discussed in these classes are carried over in the art room with a hands-on perspective. Woven into projects throughout the year is an historical and cultural component. Through the introduction of historical and contemporary artists, girls begin to investigate and identify themes reflected by different periods and styles in art around the world. Throughout the year, students participate in large and small group activities as well as individual projects.
