In fifth grade, Wellness focuses on topics pertaining to emotional and physical health and wellness. Social-emotional topics to be covered include relationship skills, conflict resolution, peer pressure, goal setting and effective communication skills.  Demonstrating an understanding of individual differences and expressing emotions in a healthy way are included within emotional wellness.

Several physical body systems will be introduced, including skeletal, muscular, immune, respiratory, circulatory and female reproductive. This aim is to achieve an understanding of the body’s functions and learn behavior for the student to keep and maintain a healthy body.  The human stages of growth from prenatal to adulthood will be covered.  During this unit, there will be an emphasis on puberty, menstruation and emotional changes. The class will finish with units on personal safety, self-advocacy and infectious and non-infectious diseases.

In the classroom, the instructional focus will be open class discussions on the unit topics.  This is a pass/fail class; small and large group class activities, personal reflections and participation lead to understanding of the curriculum.
