The year begins with exercises to loosen up, using chalk pastel and large, free gestures, made with the whole body (except for the brain) and continuing out through the arm and onto the paper. Keeping with chalk pastel, and progressing to discussion about composition, elements of line and shape, and design principles of variety, harmony and repetition, the students work collaboratively to build large, abstract designs. They also explore perspective and proportion, drawing from nature, texture, color mixing, collage, acrylic painting, silkscreen printing and three-dimensional work with papier-mâché and fabric. As part of Medieval Night preparation, students collaborate to create large, narrative paintings. Different historical periods and artists are referenced throughout the year to clarify and enhance instruction and learning.
