The seventh grade science curriculum is divided into two main units, one covering body systems and the other covering the basics of chemistry. The course begins with the study of the circulatory system, including heart, blood vessels, blood, and blood types, culminating with the dissection of the pig heart; then move onto the respiratory system, including an investigation of major organs and diseases. The final body system studied is the female and male reproductive systems. The remainder of the year is spent exploring the basic concepts of chemistry involving atomic structure, states of matter, classification and properties of matter, the periodic table, an introduction to chemical bonds, reading and writing chemical formulae, and balancing basic chemical equations. Students learn laboratory skills, including how to write formal lab reports.
