The course begins with the girls applying the equation solving skills they acquired in Pre-Algebra to solving word problems involving uniform motion and area. They will learn to recognize problems without solutions. The next unit focuses on division of monomials and special patterns used to factor polynomials. These topics are in preparation for using the zero-product property to solve quadratic equations. Students combine their factoring skills with their knowledge of operations involving fractions to add, subtract, multiply, divide and simplify algebraic fractions. They will then learn to divide a polynomial by another polynomial. The following chapter involves solving equations with fractional coefficients and fractional equations, including word problems related to these skills. The students will be introduced to functions and learn the basic tools of working with linear equations in two variables. This will include graphing, determination of the slope of a line and writing linear equations based on given facts about a line. Students will use their calculators as an integral part of this graphing unit. Next they study systems of equations involving two equations in two variables, then move to solving and graphing inequalities including combined inequalities and absolute value in open sentences. The final unit is on rational and irrational numbers. The girls will learn to simplify radicals as well as add, subtract, multiply and divide them.
