College Counseling at Agnes Irwin
The college counseling program is designed to give students the knowledge and skills they need to successfully match their academic strengths and interests with an institution of higher learning. With an eye toward changing admissions criteria, the program helps juniors and seniors effectively present the best of their abilities on paper and in person.

The process beings in January of the junior year with seminars that focus on university life and sessions that explore the resources available for conducting college and university research. Juniors also watch a mock interview between an admissions officer and a college-bound senior, attend family meetings with a college counselor and visit colleges.

During senior year, students revisit colleges of interest, attend athletic recruiting weekends, participate in weekly discussions on topics such as the college essay and attend one-on-one college counseling sessions to review college choices and strategies for applying. Senior Seminars in late May offer a series of "transition seminars," including The College 101 Series, which reviews topics such as personal finance and self-health, as well as the Insider's Guide to College, which brings back recent alumnae to talk about topics ranging from dorm life to internships and studying abroad.

Hallmarks of the Program
  • Organized by two former college admission officers
  • Maintains close contacts with college admissions departments, welcoming more than 100 visiting representatives to The Agnes Irwin School each year
  • Makes early connections with all high school students about course choices
  • Strategically works with students to discover their passion/niche and then showcase themselves in the application process through résumés, well-crafted essays, mock interviews and digital pages (public speaking also refined through required Middle School speech class and Senior Assembly)
  • Offers Senior Seminar program at end of senior year to parallel collegiate schedule and elective offerings; includes college readiness series on personal finance, self-defense, self-health, etc.
  • Allots classroom time in the school schedule to address both the college search and application process
  • Remains considerate of challenges faced by parents during the process
  • Holds office hours during holidays to help with applications
Athletic Connections:
  • Extensive and intensive involvement in athletic recruiting for both AIS and out-of-school sports
  • Counselors speak with college coaches as well as athletic liaisons to confirm intentions
  • Usually at least one NLI annually; college coaches express interest in 20 percent of graduating class
  • Athletic information included in the school’s college reference, including quotes from coaches
  • Special AIS Athletic/Academic Profile for college recruits (to send with transcripts and resumes)
