                   LIVE AUCTION

Third Grade Quilt

Third Grade Class Quilt
Value: Priceless to every 3rd grader!

The third grade girls have been busy bees creating and assembling the third grade quilt in order to show their skills and keep this wonderful tradition alive at the school.  Last year the 3rd grade class went on a field trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to view the show Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt where they viewed and were surely influenced by the many colorful patterned quilts made in the African American community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama.  This year, the 3rd graders' quilt is based on Sarah Mary Taylor’s Hands quilts which are bright, bold patterned quilts that have hands appliquéd to squares juxtaposed with squares and other shapes.  Their finished product shows the care and creativity of each girl through a process which required each of them to trace the shape of their hand in cloth and appliqué it to a fabric square using the feather stitch.  Each girl’s personality comes out in the fabrics she chose to use.  Girls used the chain stitch to embroider their names on another patch.  Multicolored fabric swatches surround the squares and bring about the playful association to Sarah Mary Taylor’s Hands quilt.  The third grade quilt is quite a treasure!

Special Thanks to Trish Siembora, Lower School Art Teacher!
