Dance

all girls school dance program

Our Dance Program focuses both on the artistic values and physical benefits of this kinesthetic art form, including but not limited to non-locomotor/axial movements; locomotor movements; relationship to a musical beat and changing tempos; kinesthetic awareness; creating sequences; and working effectively individually and collectively. Performance opportunity is available to Upper School students through Dance Motion, AIS’s annual dance concert.

Middle School

Students begin a focused study of dance in Middle School. At this time, they may select dance to fulfill their team credit requirement. From trimester to trimester, students begin a general survey of techniques and styles and have the opportunity to perform during peer assemblies.

Upper School

Upper School Dance begins with the study of strength, flexibility and technique in ballet, jazz, hip hop, tap, modern, and ethnic and social dance. More intricate barre, center floor and across-the-floor combinations will be taught at this level. As students advance through the years, so does the exploration of technique and skill.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in focused choreography study. Classes are designed to provide students with knowledge and practical application in dance composition (choreography), the creative process and the manipulation of the dance in the making of dances.
