Studio Arts

Agnes Irwin studio arts

Our Studio Arts program is deep and varied, and students enjoy the creative and fulfilling challenges that their art classes bring. Upper School students can elect to take Studio Art for one, two, three or all four years. Students have the opportunity to experience a sequence of classes that focus on and explore the fundamentals of visual art, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design and drawing, applying knowledge gained in previous years. Students may also advance their skills in Studio Arts Honors and Advancement Placement.

Lower School

The Lower School program layers the introduction of techniques, tools and art vocabulary through developmentally appropriate projects and exploration. As the students progress through the grades, so do the art styles and techniques.

Middle School

As students progress to Middle School, there is a growing emphasis on observational drawing and increased involvement with a variety of tools and techniques. Further exploration of color theory, two- and three-dimensional design, pattern, texture and craftsmanship complete the Middle School years. Throughout this period, art projects are often coordinated with other disciplines.

Upper School

In Upper School, students have the opportunity to experience a sequence of classes that focus on and explore the fundamentals of visual art, two- and three- dimensional design and drawing by applying knowledge gained in previous years. Students may also advance their skills in Studio Art Honors and Advanced Placement, in which individual portfolios that have been developed since their first Upper School Studio Arts class become submission-ready for both AP art specifications and college submissions.
