Learning to serve, serving to learn
The Lower School service program is a mix of annual community service days as well as service learning projects that are embedded in the curricular goals for each grade level. In addition, there are two Service Advisory clubs made up of students who are particularly interested in creating and leading community service in the Lower School. These girls lead assemblies, support existing programs and initiate all school projects that are in response to needs they see in the local or global community. Examples include responding to disasters like Hurricane Sandy, starting an upcycle program with Terracycle, and working in our Lower School garden.
Service Learning at grade levels includes:
1st grade - connecting student learning about Community and Needs vs Wants with a clothing collection
3rd grade - deepening understanding of culture, resources and trade by running a Fair Trade market of African crafts
4th grade - leading the LS in Hunger Awareness by organizing food drives and working with a local food pantry
