Where service shapes student life
Community service is an important part of life in the Upper School. Events throughout the year provide students the opportunity to put their skills, knowledge, and values into action. Through participating in service our girls learn to assess needs, collaborate both within and outside the AIS community, develop organizational and leadership skills, and experience the satisfaction of making a positive impact on the world. The leadership board, Student Outreach Services (SOS), oversees service in the Upper School.
Upper School students are required to complete 40 hours of service before graduation and there are many ways in which these students fulfill this requirement. School sponsored events like MLK Day, Empty Bowls, the Philly AIDS walk, Octoberfest, and Bryn Mawr tutoring are good ways for students to join in. Several student clubs have a focus on service and we also offer opportunities for students to serve our school as tour guides and as Lower School helpers. In addition, students may fill their service hours by designing their own program.
