Upper School is a time for growth, exploration, and independence – when girls become young women and prepare for the next stop on an exciting journey to adulthood.
Here at Agnes Irwin, girls are encouraged to develop confidence, take educational risks, work collaboratively in a competitive environment, and embrace the skills that lead to effective leadership. Founded in a liberal arts curriculum, science, math, technology, verbal and writing skills are an essential part of the educational experience, as are financial literacy, leadership, and service to community.
The academic program is rigorous, yet appropriately scaffolded. In the freshman and sophomore years, students master a foundation upon which they will build more advanced courses and a variety of electives, from Advanced Placement to studies of the Middle East, Graphic Design, and Art History, There are opportunities for independent research and focus in an area where the student is particularly gifted. As we shape the women leaders of tomorrow, 21st century skills are emphasized, beginning with the C21 Challenge, a freshman program of intensive interdisciplinary group problem-solving that brings classroom lessons to life. For sophomores and juniors, the Special Studies Program offers a wide variety of experiential learning sessions, both on campus and off, in locales nearby and around the world. And as seniors, students choose from a variety of seminars while participating in a college transition program. Each of these programs serves as a capstone experience that draws on the skills mastered throughout the school year.
Embedded throughout each girl’s experience is a core focus on building leadership skills. Project work in classrooms, as well as co-curricular activities outside the classroom provide opportunities to lead and learn. Agnes Irwin’s competitive athletics program also provides a natural arena for leadership in both the standard role of captains and teamwork. Service learning, the arts, multicultural awareness, student government – these are just some of the elements that round out the Agnes Irwin experience.
Upper School offers an exciting array of opportunities and a culture that embraces new ideas and encourages individual opinions. The result? Highly skilled young women who think critically and embrace the challenges presented by an ever-changing world.
