9 Sixth Graders Advance in Hardest Math Problem Contest

Are you smarter than a sixth grader?

A few students in Mrs. Abate’s accelerated math class set out to enter the Scholastic Hardest Math Problem Student Contest, and nine of them answered Challenge 1 correctly.

The annual student competition challenges students in grades 6 to 8 across the country to solve multi-step, grade-appropriate math problems that include real world situations and characters. More than 4,000 students entered Challenge 1 this year, according to a spokesperson for the contest, and about 50 percent of the entries moved on to Challenge 2.

Challenge 1 itself is a bit wordy, so feel free to test your skills with the above photo to see if you can answer the hardest math problem. Then, check our social media for the answer.

The nine students will now move forward onto Challenge 2.
