Upper School Arts

The Upper School Arts program offers in-depth study in studio art, ceramics, photography, textiles, media arts, theatre, and music. Students refine technical skills and creative voice, showcasing their work through exhibitions and performances.
Studio

Students explore the elements of visual design and expression through projects in drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking. Instruction connects historical and contemporary perspectives, introducing techniques and media from diverse artistic traditions. As they progress, students refine their technical and observational skills while developing a distinct artistic voice.
Ceramics

Students explore the properties of clay while learning hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques, along with decorating and firing processes. They study ceramics in both historical and contemporary contexts, creating functional and sculptural works. As their skills advance, students experiment with different clays and glazes and master advanced construction and decoration techniques.
Photography

Students develop both the technical skills of digital photography and an understanding of composition and photographic intent. Through shooting and editing their own images, they explore what makes a photograph effective and meaningful. Advanced students expand their skills with film photography and darkroom printing techniques, gaining a deeper appreciation for the craft.
Textiles

Students explore the form and function of textiles in contemporary society. Using both hand-sewing and machine construction techniques, they create patchwork projects, needlework, and fully functional garments, developing both technical skill and creative expression.
Media Arts (1,2,3)

Media Arts students apply the principles of design in a digital context using tools such as the Adobe Suite, scanners, and printers. They develop personal and creative expression through graphic design, focusing on layout, typography, and visual communication. Advanced students explore user experience, packaging, and branding, preparing them for real-world design challenges.
All visual artwork is displayed in the Moran Gallery throughout the year, with select pieces featured in the Brother-Sister Combined Art Show in collaboration with The Haverford School.
Theatre (1, 2, and Musical/Public Speaking)

Upper School theatre students explore all aspects of theatre production while studying the history and traditions of storytelling. As they advance, students have opportunities in musical theatre and public speaking, with performance experiences in the Upper School Musical and Upper School Play.
Music

Upper School piano students build proficiency, artistry, and technique through a foundational piano course while deepening their understanding of composers and music history.
The Upper School Chorus performs at the annual Winter Concert, and the Bel Cantos, an auditioned a cappella group, perform multiple times throughout the year, both on campus and in the community, showcasing students’ vocal talent and musical growth.
