In seventh grade Latin, students work to complete the first half of the Latin I grammar sequence and to make connections with Latin and their other subjects - from French and Spanish to math and science. The year begins with a brief review of English grammar: special attention is given to identifying and analyzing parts of speech and understanding simple English sentences so that students are familiar with the basic principles and language of grammar when we turn to Latin. Once the curriculum turns to our examination of the Latin language itself, students apply most of their energy toward developing familiarity with Latin’s distinctive rhythm and flow. As students gain confidence in their own language abilities and as their Latin vocabulary continues to expand, the course delves deeper into the examination of noun and verb formation through discussions of gender, case usage, tense, and voice. Students will also increase their understanding of English derivatives and root words in English by learning Latin vocabulary terms. By the end of the year, students are able to analyze the grammar and vocabulary of full paragraphs in Latin and translate those paragraphs into smooth English.
