Grade 7 music focuses on American musical styles that emerged from 1900 through 1960: blues, Broadway musicals, swing/Big Band, R&B, rock ‘n roll, pop and modern classical.  Audio and video examples of each style are audited to support class discussions of each topic. Hands-on projects in class give the students a chance to experience each style of music. Examples of these projects include dividing into small groups to write their own blues lyrics and writing lyrics to a song that could be used in “their” musical. Every student also learns the basics of playing guitar as a part of their musical exploration of each genre.  By the end of the year, each student will be able to identify the notes on the fret board, play simple chords, and be able to perform songs within a musical group. Throughout the year, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration will be emphasized within all class projects and activities.
