Latin 8 is a continuation of the Latin I course begun by students in the seventh grade. Expanding their knowledge of Latin grammar and vocabulary, students read increasingly challenging mythological and historical stories. As in seventh grade, emphasis is continuously placed on Latin vocabulary and grammar, both for their own sake and for the insight they can provide into English. Because of the complexity of Latin grammar and the multiple meanings of word endings that look identical, an important goal is for students to make logical hypotheses and conclusions about word units to arrive at accurate translations. Throughout the year, students are evaluated through in-class exercises and discussion, games, group and individual projects, student presentations, collected translations, weekly vocabulary and grammar quizzes, and tests. Toward the end of the year, attention in class focuses on preparations for the cumulative final exam. Students take part in two annual events that highlight and promote the culture of the classical world, the Philadelphia Classical Society’s "Latin Week Competition” and the National Latin Exam.
