Franklin Institute Partners with Agnes Irwin To Host STEM Think Tank
Posted 03/16/2016 12:09PM

Building on the success of its first STEM think tank, The Agnes Irwin School and its Center for the Advancement of Girls (CAG) will host Sharing Solutions 2016: Advancing Girls in STEM on April 15, 2016, in partnership with one of the nation's premier science museums, The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.

Sharing Solutions 2016, a one-day think tank and conference, will focus on the theme Designing a Better Pipeline, exploring ways to ensure that more girls and women find success in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Decision makers and innovators in K-12 schools, higher education, nonprofit organizations and STEM industries will come together for an engaging day of critical conversation, setting the stage with a "call to action" by science evangelist Ainissa Ramirez, author of Save Our Science: How to Inspire a New Generation of Scientists.

The event will also include TED-style talks featuring:

In the afternoon, attendees will receive an Introduction to Design Thinking and participate in design-thinking workshops facilitated by Palo Alto, California-based Leadership+Design consultants, with Carla Silver and Natalie Nixon, Ph.D., Director of Strategic Design MBA, Philadelphia University. NPR's WHYY Radio senior health writer Taunya English will lead a discussion after the session.

“The success of our program is due in part to the conversations and the creative thinking that happens outside of traditional silos — when K-12 teachers talk to university professors, who talk to corporate leaders,” said Mariandl Hufford, Agnes Irwin’s Assistant Head of School and director of its Center for the Advancement of Girls. “Those cross-industry connections set us up for actionable solutions to a persistent problem.”
