STEM Club Co-Founders To Lead Community Night at The Franklin Institute
Posted 03/21/2016 04:10PM
Agnes Irwin seniors Sophie Fisher, Anisha Mittal and Hunter Sessa will lead a series of fun, STEAM-focused activities at The Franklin Institute's Community Night on Wednesday, April 13.

Community Nights are free, educational and fun-filled science extravaganzas that include The Franklin Institute's famous exhibitions, special programs, and themed activities, and are typically held the third Wednesday of every month. April's theme is STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics).

Sessa, Mittal and Fisher (shown l-r) co-founded Agnes Irwin's STEM Club three years ago to provide their peers with an opportunity to explore hands-on activities beyond what they were learning in the classroom. Last year, they presented at Agnes Irwin's inaugural STEM conference, Sharing Solutions: Advancing Girls in STEM, which brought together leaders in K-12 schools, higher education  and business for a day of workshops and panels. The girls were approached about leading a Community Night after staff from The Franklin Institute heard them speak at the event, Fisher said.

Community Night will be "a night fueled by creativity," The Franklin Institute describes. The trio is preparing a series of activities, such as explorations of virtual reality with Google Cardboard, an activity based on geometric tile patterns used in Islamic architecture, as well as opportunities to investigate fractals, iPhone holograms, hexaflexagons, and more.

The event runs from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13. Admission is free, and there is no need to pre-register. Doors open at 5 p.m.
