The Agnes Irwin Varsity Squash team captured the Inter-Ac championship title yesterday, following an 8-1 win over Penn Charter. The Inter-Academic League is an inter-scholastic athletic conference comprised of private high schools in the Philadelphia area, and is one of the strongest leagues for squash in the country, with 2-3 teams consistently ranked in the top five in the U.S.
Playing at home in front of a large crowd, AIS secured key wins in the #5 and #2 match-ups, with senior captain Lily Zelov defeating Gwen Davis in a competitive match. AIS captured the first eight matches, and the Inter-Ac title, before sophomore Katherine Glaser lost to a strong Elizabeth Ross, Jr.
"The girls did well to keep their concentration today versus a strong Penn Charter team," said Head Coach Alex Stait. "Winning the Inter-Ac has been a goal of ours for several years — it's great to see the girls get this result after playing and working together for so many years. I feel the real difference this year is our team spirit helped us upset the odds and stay together through tough matches."
Next up for the Owls will be the MASA Championships during the first weekend of February, where the team will be the top seed. After that, the team will play in the U.S. High School National Championships and look to improve on last year's mark of 5th place.
