music program at all girls school

Music is an integral part of the lives of every student at AIS, whether in PreK or Upper School. Taught in a manner similar to how language skills are learned by children – kinesthetically, aurally and visually – our Lower School program follows the Kodaly Method, which emphasizes ear training, pitch and singing skills. Through a vast repertoire of songs, games and rhymes, students identify, learn and apply the elements of music. Murray Savar, Music Coordinator and teacher at AIS for 35 years, describes music as "the mortar that holds together the bricks of the school’s spirit." In Middle School, girls continue to master choral performance and add the study of instruments and musical theory to their work. By Upper School, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of vocal and instrumental music studies.

Lower School

Beginning in first grade, each student receives recorder instruction as a performance-oriented introduction to instrumental music. In third and fourth grades, students may participate in violin or cello classes. There are annual performances of original children’s musical involving every member of the Lower School. Winter and spring concerts also feature a wide repertoire of songs from around the world.

Middle School

In Middle School, the curriculum is augmented with guitar and handbell instruction. Choral music remains the focus but musical theory and styles are introduced and explored through listening, creating, research, singing and movement. Students also can join the chorus or instrumental ensembles.

Upper School

Our Upper School program offers courses in music theory and aural training, with opportunities for independent study in specialized areas of study such as musical composition and sound recording. Upper School students can participate in Instrumental Ensemble, chamber groups and can arrange for focused instrumental instruction.

Over one-fourth of our Upper School students sing in the chorus. We also combine annually with the Haverford, Baldwin, and Church Farm Schools in a concert of major choral work. The Bel Cantos, a select a cappella ensemble of singers, perform throughout the community at concerts, benefits and inter-school events.
