PE and Wellness
Our PE and Wellness Program provides significant time (three to four times a week) for physical education plus one day devoted to wellness. Gym class provides the physical activity and skill-based instruction that growing bodies need. Girls work collaboratively and cooperatively and are encouraged to go beyond their comfort level. Third and fourth graders learn a variety of team sports, including field hockey, volleyball, soccer and basketball. All grades end each year with a dance unit and performance at the Lower School Mayfair celebration, with the fourth grade executing the Maypole dance, a longstanding AIS tradition.
While the PE program teaches girls ways to be physically fit, the Wellness program teaches them how to take care of their bodies in healthy ways, from how to brush their teeth to the importance of good hygiene. Self-esteem and body image are stressed as a way to counteract negative images of girls that often are prevalent in popular culture.
