Inclusive Environment

Building block for community

As important as the rich diversity of our community is the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that permeates our classrooms and hallways. Inclusivity means building and sustaining communities through policies, programs and practices that keep diversity in mind. This means seeking opportunities to involve many different people in the life of the school, from guest speakers to book vendors.

Among students, among staff and between students and staff, we foster respect for the individual, appreciation of differences and supportive, lasting friendships.

Key Initiatives:
  • NAIS AIM (Assessment of Inclusivity and Multiculturalism) Survey – a comprehensive measurement of diversity, multiculturalism and equity in independent schools. Its central purpose is to assist in building and sustaining inclusive learning communities that will benefit all students.
  • Diversity Action Plan – resulting from AIM Survey, a roadmap for strengthening internal communications across the student, employee and parent communities in order to promote inclusion. 
  • National SEED Project on Inclusive Curriculum – faculty-led professional development seminars on gender fair, multiculturally equitable, globally informed and inclusive education.
  • Sponsorship of Steppingstone Scholars and A Better Chance students
  • The Dream Flag Project ® – an annual international poetry, art and community-building project for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Inspired by the dream poetry of Langston Hughes and Buddhist prayer flags.
