Student Support Services

Ensuring academic success, personal well-being

Our team of learning specialists, certified counselors, nurses and psychologists supports students in a variety of ways and over varying lengths of time to ensure their academic success and personal well-being.

The SSS Learning Specialist offers curriculum support across all three divisions by offering a variety of workshops, visiting classrooms to speak about various topics, and supporting students with their studies. Faculty consult with the Learning Specialist to discuss strategies to improve the learning of all students. SSS works with students individually or in groups, counsels parents looking for ways to optimize their daughter's learning at home, and works with faculty to provide the strongest possible educational environment. In each division, the Learning Specialist is a member of the division’s Student Support team, which meets to discuss students individually and division-wide. In Lower School, a reading specialist works with students who require additional practice and reinforcement of those skills associated with proficient reading, and is a resource to faculty and parents as well.

To address any emotional needs, our SSS staffers provide short-term individual counseling to students, lead classroom groups, consult with faculty and make referrals for evaluation and intervention as needed. They also work closely with administrators and teachers to address any emotional issues that may be interfering with a student’s academic progress. They teach courses such as Courage to Be Me in Middle School,  which deals with relationship dynamics and navigating difficult social settings. They also implement the Inside/Outside program for sixth grade students, which targets body-esteem issues during a time of great social-emotional change in a girl's development. In each division, a counselor/clinician is available to students, faculty, and parents; that person is also a member of the division’s Student Support team.

Working in cooperation with our Physical Education Department, the SSS staff regularly assess the overlap between the AIS health curriculum and its work. In the Transitions course, for example, students have the opportunity to learn about and discuss a range of topics, including friendship and communication, alcohol and drug use, peer pressure, relationships, sexuality and diversity.

It is our belief that by supporting parents as they help their daughters navigate an increasingly complex world, our Support Services staff are ultimately supporting our students. To that end, the SSS team offers a series of workshops for parents and students throughout the year that tackle issues ranging from the academic to the social/emotional.

Courage to Be Me

This fifth-grade curriculum was designed as part of our life skills and character education program to help ease the transition to Middle School, which brings the emergence of a greater ability for self-awareness and self-reflection. With this new cognitive strength, girls may initially become increasingly self-conscious, self-critical and tangentially, more critical of others. Through activity-based learning, and learning through engaging stories of other girls’ experiences at AIS and across the globe, our girls develop their emotional intelligence and empathy, both so important for success in life. In the process, girls increase their awareness of their own strengths and qualities and develop greater generosity and compassion toward themselves and others.


This dynamic sixth-grade curriculum was designed to help emerging teens develop the skills required to successfully navigate the challenging  terrain of early adolescence. Through a series  of activity-based  lessons, Inside/Outside promotes personal and relational competence by teaching self-awareness, empathy, coping skills, communication tools, strategies  for constructive self-talk, methods for managing stress and tension, recognition of the forces that drive social comparison and cause insecurities, and media literacy.
