Curriculum Threads

Connected and Continuous

In our Middle School, curriculum is organized around core ideas and questions. Looking at the across-the-board academic experience of a student at any particular grade level allows faculty to capitalize on overlap among the disciplines, thus facilitating learning experiences that enhance understanding. As girls discover connections across disciplines, they move toward a broader and more conceptual comprehension of skills and content. These core ideas and examples of coordinating questions are shown below.

Additionally, five key strands of knowledge and experience have emerged as integral to all disciplines at all grade levels in the Middle School. Those five strands include:

  • Quantitative & Spatial Reasoning
  • Financial Literacy
  • Research
  • Core Values
  • STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics)

As a student moves through our Middle School, her learning will integrate appropriately sequenced content and skills in each discipline, exposure to a core set of concepts and ideas at each grade level, and development of critical skills and experience in the five key strands of knowledge.

Grade 5 - Stories and Structure

How do stories connect us to each other and to history? What story is told by this piece of art? How is writing structured? What are the similarities and differences in the structure of languages? How are simple machines connected to physical structures?

Grade 6 - Settings and Systems

How does place matter? How does time matter? How are people’s perspectives, ways of life, hopes and dreams, challenges and histories impacted by time and place? What is a system? What are some natural systems? How can systems be designed to solve problems?

Grade 7 - Culture and Connections

What are the concepts and elements shared by all cultures? What happens when cultures are at odds? How is culture shared? How do English, French and Spanish connect to Latin? How do Renaissance cultures connect to today’s culture? How do elements, atoms and molecules connect to create the physical world in which we live?

Grade 8 - Home and Voice

How is “home” defined? Why is home important? What are/have been mankind’s various homes? What are our responsibilities toward sustaining our homes? Who has a place at the table, a voice, in the homes that we’ve created?
